Who is the vampire's closest friend?
The vampire bat, of course!
Every time you see a vampire in the movies he is from the small surrounded by furry companions to accompany him on his nightly depredations. If a vampire to make a quick exit, he must often turns into one of these creepy critters. But what is a vampire, and they suck blood from unwilling host? The common vampire bat lives in Central and South America, along with its Cousins, the White-Winged Vampire Bat and the Hairy-Legged Vampire Bat. The common vampire bat is the only one who loves to eat mammals, birds prefer the other two. They have been around for at least six to eight million years, going back to fossil records.
They love to live in caves, abandoned mines, Tree holes and sometimes abandoned buildings. Like most bats can see it, but use echolocation to find their prey. Living nine years in the wilderness, they have a baby a year, and nest in large family groups, sleeping on his head.
Time to hunt! The small bats blow out of their cozy caves around dusk, looking for fat cattle or pigs sleeping in the vicinity of land. The vampire bats consume only blood for nutrition. They drink about two tablespoons of blood per day and must drink at least every other day, or they starve.
Ah, a nice big sleeping cow. The vampire bat crashes back down on the cow, and quickly penetrates the hide with the sharp cutting teeth, so that two small holes (like Dracula!). Scientists study the anticoagulant in the vampire bat and have a drug called "Draculin" help made in anticoagulation for heart patients. Other scientists are helping with the compounds of stroke patients limit the effects of blood clots in the brain.
